Biology is the study of life.  Through the course of the year we will focus on the following topics:  Laboratory Safety, Characteristics of Living Things, Biochemistry, Cell Anatomy & Physiology, Cellular Energy, Cell Division, Nucleic Acids, Genetics, Biotechnology, Evolution, and Taxonomy.    I look forward to getting to know each of you as we explore the interesting and diverse world of biology.  Throughout the year keep this in mind:  if you need help with the content of this class, PLEASE contact me!

This page will provide you with basic information concerning my classroom.  For more details check out your specific class pages.

Grading Procedures

  • Grades are calculated in categories for this course.  The categories and percentages assigned to the categories varies depending upon your class.  For specific information check out page for your class.

Classroom Procedures
  • Posted Grades:  Grades can be viewd on-line using Power Schools.  Grades will also be posted in my classroom by class, section and student id number.  I will update this periodically throughout the marking period.  Make sure you know your student id number.
  • Missed Work:  Upon return from an absence it is YOUR responsibility to find out what you missed.  You can ask a classmate or me.  You should check the "extra handout" bins that are organized by class and day of the week.  You will have one day for each day you miss to make up missed work.  For extended absences you should see me.  If an assignment was graded in your absence, a grade of "0" will be recorded  in my grade book / computer program.  When you make up the work, your grade will be changed to reflect your actual grade.  If you fail to make up the assignment, the "0" will remain.
  • Graded Work:  Once I have graded your assignments I will place them in a "graded work" bin by class.  If you would like to keep these papers, it is YOUR responsibility to pick them up.  If you do not pick them up by the end of the marking period, they will be recycled / thrown out.
  • Laboratory Expectations:  You will be given a laboratory safety agreement.  You will be expected to read and sign this agreement.  This agreement will serve as a contract between us that you will abide by all terms in the agreement.  Labs are a privilege.  This is a time when you will be able to work with a partner(s) and obtain hands on learning experiences.  This privilege will be taken away should you fail to me the terms of this agreement.
  • Late assignments:  Homework is done (points earned) or not done (no points earned).  For projects, labs, and reports you will lose 1 letter grade (10 percentage points) for each day that an assignment is late.  Assignments will only be accepted at the beginning of class unless otherwise specified.  Assignments will not be accepted after 2 days.
  • Sectionals:  (This applies to those of you involved in band, chorus, and orchestra.)  I will allow you to go to sectionals if you have an 80% or better in my class and have no outstanding assignments.  You must check with me prior to going.  When you do I will tell you what we are doing for the day.  At that time you must make a choice, sectionals or biology.  If you choose sectionals, you are accepting the responsibility for making up the work that you will miss in class.  If you should need assistance with the material covered in class, you must make arrangements with me or a classmate to get help.  There are a few times when I will not allow anyone to go to sectionals these include:  tests, presentations, and lab activities.
