Medication Administration at School
The school nurse must have written permission from the child's parent/guardian and a written order from the family physician to administer prescription medication at school.
The medication must be accompanied by a Lower Dauphin School District Authorization for Medication During School Hours form. Authorized prescription medication is to be brought to the school nurse by a parent/guardian in the original bottle/container. A request for a long-term prescribed medication must be resubmitted at the beginning of each school year.
Students shall be permitted to possess asthma inhalers and to self-administer the prescribed medication to treat asthma when such use is parent and physician authorized in writing in accordance with state law and board policy. Certain other rescue medications are also permitted to be self-administered by students in accordance with state law and board policy. Please contact your school nurse for more information.
Over-the-counter medications, including cough drops and lozenges, with written approval from a parent may be administered to students.
Students may not carry any medication (including over-the-counter medications) without prior approval from the nurse.
