From information received in the media, most of us know that being healthy and physically fit is a goal of many Americans today. This course will strive to help each student develop a positive attitude toward health and fitness and help to promote an active lifestyle. Improved health and fitness will reflect itself in every area of the student’s life.
OBJECTIVES:
- To improve physical fitness.
- To decrease stress and improve mental health.
- To improve posture and prevent back problems.
- To develop courage, self-control, courtesy, honesty, cooperation and initiative.
- To develop rhythm, alertness and reaction time.
- To give insight into and encourage participation in lifetime activities.
- To promote good sportsmanship and fair play.
- To accomplish physical achievements.
- To develop an enjoyment of recreational pursuits.
- To gain knowledge and an appreciation for sports, games and the skills involved.
PROGRAM ACTIVITIES:
The middle school program focuses on improving physical fitness levels, participation in team sports and development of social skills. Activities include: physical fitness testing, endurance runs, field hockey, soccer, football, speed ball, folk or social dance, small games, basketball, resistance training, aerobics, yoga, volleyball, and softball.
POLICIES:
- CLOTHING: STUDENTS MUST CHANGE INTO ATHLETIC CLOTHING FOR EVERY CLASS.
-
Regulation middle school uniform includes: non-marking sneakers, white T-shirt, dark shorts and (during colder weather) any color sweat pants and sweat shirts are permitted with a white T-shirt underneath. Lower Dauphin T-shirts are preferred. Full names should be written on all items and shoes.
-
Jewelry: You may not wear hoop earrings during PE class. Stud earrings are permitted if your PE instructor deems it safe during your activity. No bracelets or necklaces should be worn during any PE activity. No body or facial piercings are allowed during PE class. They must be removed for participation that day and can be re-inserted after PE class if you wish.
-
Hiking shoes and turf shoes are not permitted for indoor PE class and platform sneakers are never permitted.
- Cut-off jeans are not permitted. Sweatpants that are cut-off should be hemmed neatly. Boxers are not permitted as outerwear.
- Clothing should be neat and shirts should be tucked in. Shorts may not be rolled at the top and should be worn above the hips in the appropriate fashion.
- No school issued athletic uniforms or equipment may be used for physical education.
- We will be going outside through November and then be back outside in early spring. Early morning classes may have wet grass and should bring an extra pair of sneakers. All students should keep warm clothing in their lockers because even a student not participating will be accompanying the teacher outside.
- Failing to follow Physical Education clothing policy for three (3) times during a marking period will result in a detention.
Additional recommended items for class:
*Deodorant in a plastic container. No glass containers.
*Mouth guards or mouth pieces are encouraged to protect teeth during some
activities.
*A lock to secure items in their locker during class.
- MEDICAL EXCUSES OR PARENTAL EXCUSES:
Parental excuses are accepted or rejected at the discretion of the instructor and/or school nurse. Students will dress and participation will be modified. Excuses for three or more days must be from a physician. Students with medical excuses will be given alternative assignments.
- Improper use or destruction of equipment will result in the student paying for the equipment and disciplinary action will follow.
D. Locks, Lockers and Locker rooms: lockers are for student use during their scheduled PE class and for after school athletic programs. Students may not leave their PE clothing or other items in the locker room at any other time. While in class, all items should be locked in a locker. Each student will need to provide a lock for their personal use. Locks should be taken off the locker when a student leaves to allow other students to use the locker. Any lock that is left on will be removed by the PE staff or custodian. No food or drink of any kind is permitted in the locker room or the gym. All students are responsible for keeping the locker rooms clean.
EVALUATION:
Students will be evaluated daily and a letter grade will be given at the end of each marking period. Grades will be based on the following items:
*Attitude/enthusiasm, initiative and cooperation.
*Sportsmanship: fair play and abiding by the rules.
*Physical Skills: attempts to make improvements and complete skills regardless
of ability.
*Participation: making an honest effort in class and cooperating in groups.
*Preparedness: grade will be affected by improper dress.
Three unprepareds in one marking period will result in academic detention after school. Every three after that will result in a subsequent detention.
*Extra credit may be assigned in special cases. Being prepared for class and
making an effort to participate daily will eliminate the need for additional work.
