Synopsis of Curriculum
This course offers the advanced junior or senior student an in–depth study of the history of primarily Western art, from the ancient world into the present day. Students will survey the development of the visual arts, its major movements and personalities, and the relationship to the historical period in which it was created. Requirements include written reports, critiques, exams and slide identification in preparation for the AP Art History Exam. Gallery visits during the year will supplement classroom visuals and textbook assignments.
Introduction – Western vs. Non-Western; Vocabulary of Art; Analysis of Art
Prehistoric – Primitive Writing Cultures
Man is the Measure of All Things (Ancient Greece, Etruria and Rome)
Early Religious Art (Jewish, Early Christian, Byzantine, Islamic Art)
Non-Western Art (Asian, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Americas, African, Pacific)
Medieval, Romanesque and Gothic Art and Architecture
