Synopsis of Curriculum

The Engineering Design Curriculum introduces students to the world of engineering product design. Students learn the steps of the engineering design process (or loop), and then work through those steps as they complete multiple designs challenges. The Civil Engineering component of the course provides students with opportunities to learn the principle important to building strong and stable structures. Students design and create balsa wood bridges and towers, and then experiment to see how their structures stand up to strength, mass distribution, and wave frequency testing. The Mechanical Engineering component of the course helps students to understand energy and forces and apply them to create solutions to real-world problems. Students build electric and solar cars, use cranes, and experiment with catapults and trebuchets. In addition, they build and modify a hydraulic robotic arm. As students generate solutions, a heavy emphasis is placed on the use of SolidWorks CAD program for modeling their solutions, as well as 3D printing technology as a means of manufacturing solutions.
