First grade is an exciting and fun year of school! You will see your child become a more confident reader, writer and mathematician.
In reading, I use large and small group instruction with flexible grouping. We will focus on phonics skills, fluency, and comprehension. Students will get a chance to work with partners during reading centers doing a variety of activities (sight words, spelling, fluency etc). Students will always be busy, engaged and moving.
Students will work hard on their writing during our Kid Writing time! Some days students will write in response to a prompt or sentence starter. Other days they will be able to write about whatever they want!
In math, we will cover a variety of topics using hands on activities and problem solving!
Students will have optional homework. Homework will consist of a take-home book to practice fluency or a math activity. There will be a homework tracker in your child's folder each week.
