Educational Websites
Lower Dauphin School District provides various educational content to students in digital form. Where student accounts are necessary, the District ensures that all content selected has been reviewed by District personnel and determined to be compliant with the Children’s Online Protection and Privacy Act (COPPA). COPPA law applies to commercial websites and apps, and not directly to school districts. The law is also only relevant to students under 13 years of age.
Although COPPA places the burden on companies to comply with the law, many of these companies attempt to shift the burden of some or all of their compliance obligations, such as obtaining parent consent, to school districts. In an effort to provide transparency, Lower Dauphin School District has opted to list district approved applications in the list below, along with a link to their privacy policy wherever possible. Not all applications listed below require parent consent. In providing this information Lower Dauphin School District is not taking over the responsibility that website and online application owners have to comply with COPPA (where relevant), but rather providing information and transparency to parents and guardians on the applications that may be used in the classroom and that may fall under COPPA. It is the responsibility of the website / application operator to comply with the Rule.
Each approved resource supports classroom instruction. However, not every application is used in every classroom, grade, or school. Our teachers select applications that support the curriculum they are teaching and is age and instructionally appropriate for the students that they teach. If a parent/guardian has specific concerns about an application that is being used in their child's classroom we encourage them to contact their teacher or school for additional information.
Click on the name of each resource below for more information on that site’s privacy policies. This list of approved sites is updated regularly, so be sure to check back often for new websites and apps.
Teachers, Please Note:
Some resources listed below may operate on a freemium business model and require a paid subscription for advanced features that the district hasn't currently purchased. In addition, the IT Department may not support issues that arise for applications with which the district does not have a contract.
For websites that require students to type their name to join an activity, students should only use their first name or a pseudonym.
