Notice for Parents of Preschoolers

There are two agencies that can provide your preschool child with the early support he or she needs in order to be successful in school and in life. The Capital Area Head Start and the Capital Area Intermediate Unit both provide free services to preschool children between the ages of 3-5 who qualify.

The Capital Area Intermediate Unit (CAIU) provides free services to children ages 3-5 who have delays in one or more of the following areas:
  • Speech and Language
  • Cognitive development
  • Behavior/Socialization
  • Vision
  • Hearing
  • Motor Development
If you are concerned about your child's progress, the CAIU will evaluate your child to identify possible needs. The earlier your child receives the support he or she needs, the earlier he or she can achieve success.

The CAIU program also helps when your child moves into a school-age program such as kindergarten by providing invaluable information about your child to their teacher. For more information or to schedule a screening time, please contact the CAIU Preschool Program by calling 1-800-244-2425, ext. 8557.

The Capital Area Head Start program helps to build the teaching relationship between parents and children by offering support in the form of age-appropriate activities and parenting skills. This program is available to parents who meet low income guidelines and have preschool children between the ages of 3-5. This program includes:
  • Medical Screening
  • Educational Activities
  • Opportunities for Parent Involvement
  • Nutritional and Health Information
Head Start is a free service to those who meet the requirements. For more information or to complete a pre-application, please contact Capital Area Head Start by calling 1-800-750-8002.
