Grading Letter for Families

Dear East Hanover Families,
As we all know, we will be completing our school year in a virtual learning environment. Although this is not the ideal learning environment, we are very impressed with the participation of the students and the support you all are providing your children. Thank you for your understanding and willingness to work together to keep the learning process moving forward.
As we look at virtual learning being the way that we complete the third trimester, we wanted to get information out to you on how the learning will be reflected on our final report card. We know that all of our students are doing their best to participate in the instructional activities that are being provided by the teachers. We also know that all of our families are coming from different situations as we all navigate our ways through the current shelter in place orders. Knowing this, we feel that it is not appropriate to give grades in the traditional sense.
As you know, the 2nd trimester ended on March 6th, and we were fortunate to send report cards home on our last day of school prior to school closure on March 13th. In light of distance learning, grading for the 3rd marking period will change. In short, the current marks that students receive will reflect students participation in their learning activities. Please take note of the change in definitions below:
Explanation of Marks
“O” or “+” = Student has been fully engaged in learning activities and has submitted the assignments.
“P” or "✔" = Student has been engaged in learning activities and has submitted most of the assignments
“PP” or "✔-" = Student has limited engagement in the learning activities and has submitted few assignments.
“NA” = Grade not assigned
Defining the marks on the report card based on participation and engagement allows for recognition of the work the students have been doing during this time and understanding of the varying individual learning situations of the students. The “NA” allows for the acknowledgement that some students, through no fault of their own, have not been able to participate in all or parts of the instruction.
The teachers will still be able to provide feedback to the students on the work that they have submitted. They will be able to do this first through direct feedback on the individual assignments. The teachers will also be able to provide feedback on the student’s overall performance during the third trimester through narrative comments on the report card. The comment section of the report card will give teachers the ability to provide you, the parents, with information on how your child has continued to progress in their understanding of each of the core and special subjects.
Hopefully this letter has helped to answer any questions you might have had regarding grading of your child during the third trimester of the 2019-2020 school year and the rationale behind those grades.
